How to Make a 2D Picture Look Metallic

Using the "Layers" tool in Adobe Photoshop CS5 or Elements, you can add effects to your picture to make it look metallic. Digital pictures can be altered in the program to slightly or drastically alter their final appearance. Adobe Photoshop CS5 is an advanced program designed for professional photographers and illustrators. Adobe Photoshop Elements has the same tools and effects that you will need to create the metallic look in your picture.

Instructions

      Turn on your home computer and open up Adobe Photoshop CS5 or Elements. When the program has been opened, click "File" in the navigation bar of the program and select "Open" from the drop down menu. Select the file you want add the effect to. Highlight the file and click "Ok" located in the bottom right of the window to open the picture.

      Click "Layer" in the navigation bar and select "New" then "Layer from Background" from the subsequent menus. A layer is similar to transparent sheet that is placed on top of the image. Adjustments can be made to this sheet. When done, the layers are "Flattened" and effects are added to the picture.

      Click the "Effects" tab in the right margin in window. Select "Sketch" from the options. Locate, click, hold and drag the icon for "Chrome" from the margin to the picture. Release the mouse button and a new window will open up.

      Click, hold and adjust the two sliders for "Detail" and "Smoothness" for the Chrome effect you just added. When you are satisfied with the image as it appears, click "OK" and the program will add the effect.

      Click "Layer" and select "Flatten Image" from the drop down menu. Click "File" and select "Save as" from the menu, give your edited image a new name and save it to your computer's hard drive.
