How to Layer Photos of Different Sizes

Layering pictures of different sizes in a photo editing program is a way to create an interesting photo collage. Photo editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP and Paint.net provide you with ability to add pictures in layers and make adjustments to those layers. Finish the collage by flattening, or combining, the layers.

Turn your home computer on and open up Adobe Photoshop, GIMP or Paint.net. If you do not have these programs, they are available as downloads on the Internet. Photoshop has a trial version, while the other two are free programs. The wording in the three programs varies slightly, but the steps are the same.

Click "File" in the navigation bar and select "New," then "Blank file" from the drop-down menu. A new blank file will appear on the screen with a dialog box requiring you to adjust the width, height and resolution settings for file. Click "OK" when finished, and the new file will be created.

Click "File" in the navigation bar and select "Place" from the drop-down menu. Use your cursor to navigate to the folder containing the images you want to use. Highlight the file for the first image and click "OK" to add the picture to the new file. When the picture appears on the screen you can click and hold on the edge of the picture and reposition it to the location you wish. Repeat this process with each additional picture you want to add. Every time you add a different picture, a new layer is created for that picture. This allows you to later go in and adjust each picture individually, if needed.
