How to Make Portraits From Pictures

Digital technology has had a significant impact on the world of photography. In addition to changing the way pictures are shot, stored and saved, digital technology now enables photographers to change the final appearance of photographs. Using advanced photo editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop, you can make a portrait from a picture and have it appear as a painting or drawing. You can then print the image on a canvas or textured paper to further enhance the effect.

Instructions

  Turn on your computer and open up Adobe Photoshop. Click "File" and select "Open" from the drop-down menu. Use your cursor to toggle to the folder containing the image you want to convert to a portrait, highlight the file then click "OK" in the bottom right of the window to open the file.

  Click "Layer" in the navigation bar of the program and select "Layer from Background." Click the "Effects" menu in the right margin and select "Artistic," a number of effects will appear. Click, hold and drag the "Watercolor" effect from the menu to your picture.

  Click and hold the adjustment tabs for "Brush detail," "Shadow Intensity" and "Texture" until you have achieved the desired look. Different effects will have different tabs to adjust allowing you to customize the portrait exactly the way you want. Click "OK" when you have completed all of the changes you want to make.

  Click "Layer" and select "Flatten Image" from the drop down menu. Click "File" and select "Save as," give your edited image a new name and select "OK."
