Suggest a few possible pictures that could run with your story. Sometimes editors may not have enough knowledge about the topic of the story to think about picture possibilities. Providing the editor with two or three picture ideas that are well thought out may give the editor enough information to decide to shoot a photo.
Suggest a time and place when the photo can be taken. Try to make it easier for the magazine editor by giving him or her suggestions on a time and place for the photo shoot. Be sure to tell the editor why you have selected the location and how it will benefit the story. Since the editor wants to produce the best magazine possible, if you can convey how the picture will improve the magazine, the editor may choose to include one.
Send in some picture samples with your story. By including two or three submitted pictures with your article, you are giving the editor some visual clues on how the photo could enhance the story. Make sure the pictures you send are different from each other and that they accurately convey or add to your story. Include both vertical and horizontal options in your pictures.
