How to Sign My Photographs

Signed photographs are usually associated with music bands, actors and sports stars who offer these items in response to fan letters. However, signing your own images, depicting anything from a touching family scene to a pretty landscape picture, can be an effective way of personalizing a gift to a friend or relative.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a marker. Water-based markers are likely to rub off easily, so a permanent marker is usually the best option. Select a color that won't detract too much from the picture itself. Dark blue or black usually are best.

    • 2

Check the tip of the permanent marker. Tip size is crucial when signing photographs; a fat tip can make writing difficult and result in letters appearing blurred and indistinct.

    • 3

Select the photograph you want to sign. If you are using a permanent marker with a broad tip, you will need a large photograph to allow you to sign it clearly and legibly.

    • 4

Pick a place on the photograph where you want to sign the image. Common sense is the golden rule here. Avoid signing over people's faces or details of the photograph that are important, such as attractive landscape details. The bottom area on either side is usually the best place as important elements in the photograph are usually at the center.

    • 5

Sign in the same way as you would with a pen, using a brisk, firm motion. Don't hesitate while writing as this may cause smudges or result in a crooked signature.

    • 6

Leave the photograph to dry for about 30 minutes. Avoid touching it or packing it away with other documents as this may lead to smudging.
