Things You'll Need
Instructions
Collect or buy a number of child safe and friendly props. This can include soft play mats, stuffed animals, blankets, furniture and shaped pillows that can be used a support for the child. Encourage the parents of the newborn to bring in a familiar blanket from home.
Position three studio lights, one to the left of where the child will be positioned, one to the right and one above and to the back. Turn the lights on, the left at full power, the right and rear one at half power. If the studio lights have a modeling light turn this on as well. This will help to create a softly lit environment while you position the baby.
Talk with the parents when they first arrive and discuss the type of pictures they want to have taken. Prepare a shot list that has five to seven different poses. You will have to work quickly and be prepared, once the baby gets tired or bored, she may be more difficult to position and photograph.
With the parent's permission and assistance, position the newborn into the first position. Have one parent stay close to the infant so she does not roll or injure herself. Have the second parent or family member stand behind you, so he can get the baby's attention to take the picture.
Focus the camera and set your exposure. Take several pictures of each pose. Once you are confident you have a good image move on to the next pose.
