Suggestions for Yearbook Photos

Yearbooks capture memories of the events of a school year and save them for decades to come. In addition to including traditional school portraits, yearbook editors usually set aside a number of pages for other photos. The photos you select should encapsulate all the events that took place during the year. Most people like to see themselves in pictures, and a yearbook full of engaging candid pictures will be remembered for years to come.
  1. Prom

    • For graduating students, prom is often the highlight of the school year. Dedicate two to four pages to images from the school's prom. If possible, photographers should attend pre-prom parties or events and fittings as guys are fitted for tuxes and girls go shopping for dresses. Include pictures of the hall being decorated. Photograph people arriving and, if your school observes the tradition, the crowning of the prom king and queen.

    Sports Teams and Social Clubs

    • Cover as many sports teams and their competitions as possible. Include staff or student photos showing your school winning at a competition or game. Include individual pictures of different students competing and those who came out to support the team. Social clubs, bands and other groups throughout the school are just as important. Cover their events, practices or meetings when possible. If you school has seasonal concerts, have a photographer present to take pictures of students getting ready and setting up the stage and to shoot different aspects of the performance.

    School Life

    • Every day, your school is filled with many activities and picture possibilities. From the routine of students arriving and morning announcements to life in the hallways, cafeterias and around school property, each scene offers potential pictures that help illustrate a student's experience.

    Teachers and Staff

    • Whether you like all of them or not, teachers and staff are a big part of your school year. And, just like students, some teachers are more apt to be photographed than others. Students see teachers and staff each school day performing their work, and including a few of these pictures fleshes out the story of school life. Many teachers coach athletic teams or advise student clubs. Teachers also chaperone events and trips. Photograph your teachers and staff in these activities as well as in the classroom.
