Things You'll Need
Instructions
Set up your shooting area. Hang the backdrop you want to use and place the stool, chair, couch, bench or decide where your model will stand during the photo shoot. Place the studio lights into the scene, turn them on and take a test shot. Review the photo on the camera's Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen and look for dust spots on your camera's sensor. Clean the front and rear glass elements of your lens using a microfiber lens cloth.
Review with the makeup artist and the wardrobe department the type of photo you want to take. Advise them that there will be no post production, so makeup and clothes have to be perfect. When the model is done in makeup and wardrobe, inspect the model to make sure her makeup is even and there are no loose or hanging threads on her clothes.
Position the model for the first series of shots. Place one studio light to the left of the model and direct the light towards him. This will be the main light. Position a second light on the opposite side of him that will be used as a fill light. Place a third light behind and direct it towards the backdrop.
Turn on the main light to full power, the second and third lights to half power. Take a meter reading using a hand-held flash meter, or connect the studio lights to your camera. Take a test shot and adjust the shutter speed and aperture until the exposure is set. Set your camera's white balance to "Flash."
Attach your camera and lens to a tripod and place the tripod and camera into the correct shooting position, approximately 2 to 3 feet in front of the model, or to the position where you are able to compose the photo to your liking.
Begin shooting, taking only the photos you feel are the best. Review the photos on your camera's LCD screen and delete the images you don't like. Continue shooting until you have the images you want. Take your time with each shot and download to your computer when you're done.
