How to Locate Photos With EXIF

EXIF is an acronym for "Exchangeable Image File Format" and it refers to the data that is contained in the properties of digital pictures. There are a number of different fields in the EXIF information that includes everything from the type of lens that was used, if the flash was discharged, the date the picture was taken and the type of camera with which it was taken. You can use this information as a search term when you are looking for images.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your home computer and connect to the Internet. Once connected, open a search engine and select images for your search parameter.

    • 2

In the search window, insert the term you want to use to locate pictures. If you want pictures that were shot with a 300mm lens, enter "300mm lens" into the search field and click the search button. The search engine will return images that contain 300 in the lens focal length field.

    • 3

Use more specific information if the initial search returns too many results. You can select dates, camera types and the time of day the picture was taken. Some camera phones will record a GPS location in the EXIF data. This information is recorded as a longitude and latitude position. To search for pictures using this feature you will have to have the longitude and latitude position you want to search for.
