How to Make a Yarn Fringe for Photos

Many photographers use a yarn fringe accessory as a photography prop. It allows you to create especially precious portraits of infants and young children. A completed yarn fringe is composed of many strands of yarn, securely sewn at the middle, and can be laid out to form a square or an oval shape depending on what the photo requires. It can also be draped over a crib or basket making a beautifully comfortable space to rest a small child in for a photo shoot.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy or find unique yarns. Use ten or more yarns to create rich texture and color.

    • 2

Cut the yarn into 2-foot-long strands.

    • 3

Stack them neatly on top of each other and side by side until the pile becomes 1 inch tall and 2 feet wide.

    • 4

Pick up about an inch or two of the yarn bundle and begin to feed it through the sewing machine carefully. End the seam before reaching the end of the small yarn bundle.

    • 5

Pick up another inch or two of the yarn and feed that through the sewing machine leaving no space between the yarn you just sewed and this new addition. Make sure that the yarn thickness is evenly 1 inch thick throughout.

    • 6

Continue to add yarn until all of it has been added to the sewn yarn fringe.
