How to Get Rid of Water Marks in a Picture

A watermark is an image that many photographers place in the corner of an image to identify who took that photo. In most cases, it is considered copyright infringement to remove the watermark from a photo and republish the image. If you do not own the rights to the photo, then you should not remove the watermark. However, if you do own the photo and want to remove the watermark, you can do so using photo-editing software. Once the mark is removed, you can publish the photo online or print it out for framing.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Scan the photo into the computer if you want to remove the watermark from a hard copy. Open the image in the photo-editing software.

    • 2

Select the cloning tool. Click on the area immediately surrounding the watermark with the clone tool. This will copy a small section of the photo.

    • 3

Click on the watermark closest to the area that you selected. This will transfer the image you cloned to the watermarked area, removing the watermark.

    • 4

Continue to highlight the area surrounding the watermark and cloning the background image in place of the watermark. You will have to make several small copies of the background to make the image look normal without the watermark.

    • 5

Save the photo periodically, to protect your work. If you make a mistake, you can load an earlier version of the photo.
