Floater Frames & Ideas

Floater frames allow a picture to appear suspended within the frame, as it will touch none of the sides. Typically, this is accomplished by laying your photograph onto one piece of glass and sandwiching it under another so that it will stay in place. Use floater frames to display your favorite photographs.
  1. Family Wall

    • Use floater frames to create a wall display that will showcase photos of your entire family. Gather a variety of photos with either the same orientation or background color. If all the pictures showcase similarities, purchase floater frames that coordinate without being identical. If you can not find pictures you like that are similar, purchase identical floater frames. Place the photos into the floater frames, either by themselves or two per frame. Experiment with groupings on the floor so that you know what will look best when you hang it on the wall. Use pin nails for minimal damage to your wall while hanging your photographs.

    Three-Piece Photograph

    • For a dramatic piece of art, take a panoramic shot that is split into three photographic frames. If you are unable to split it on your camera or computer, print out the large panoramic view and cut it into thirds. Purchase three identical, neutral-colored floater frames to best accent your photo. Place the pictures into the center of the floater frames and hang them on the wall in sequence. This will show the entire panoramic view while creating a dramatic decoration for your living space.

    Torn-Edge Mounting

    • With old canvas or letters, the edges may become torn and frayed. Showcase the age of these pieces by using a double-mount technique. Attach the canvas or letter onto a dark color of mat, such as brown or black. Ensure that all of the frays and tears lay flat before laying the piece face down on the floater frame. Place the secondary piece of glass onto the back of the mat and secure the piece in place. This technique showcases the tears against the dark background, contrasting the canvas or letter's age with the modern method of framing.

    Canvas Floating

    • This method is slightly different from typical floater frames. No glass is involved with the frame. Instead, you are directly mounting the canvas onto the frame with about a 1/4 inch of space between the edge of the canvas and the frame. If your artwork is decorated on the edges of the canvas, floating frames allow you to see the canvas from almost every side. The painting will be attached to the frame through a stretcher on the back, whether it is the painting's own stretcher or one you must attach to hold the frame on the painting.
