How to Take Pictures in Midair

Taking pictures of people or animals when they are in midair takes some practice and some planning. The auto-focusing systems on digital cameras work on contrasting colors to focus the lens on your subject. When the subject is moving or flying through midair, it becomes difficult for the photographer to keep the focus of the camera on the subject. Shutter speed is another consideration when shooting this type of picture.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your camera on and insert a blank memory card into the camera. Turn the camera exposure mode to the setting for shutter priority. In this mode the photographer controls the shutter speed and the camera selects correct aperture.

    • 2

Select the shutter speed you want to use for your picture. A slower shutter speed, such as 1/60th of a second, and panning on the subject will create a picture with a sharp, in-focus subject and motion blur in the background, giving the photo a feeling of movement and speed. Using a fast shutter speed of 1/250th of a second or higher will freeze your subject and create a sharp and in-focus picture.

    • 3

Track or pan your subject as it passes in front of you. Press and hold the shutter release halfway down to lock the camera's auto-focus and metering systems.

    • 4

Press the shutter release all the way down to take a photo when you have composed the picture to your liking.
