How to Make a Lens Case

In the hands of photographers, cameras and lenses are mere tools used to create their work. Just like the tools that carpenters and mechanics use, cameras and lenses represent an investment that needs to be protected when not in use. When you purchase a lens, it may come with a soft carrying case, however, if you plan to travel with that lens or keep it in your car from assignment to assignment, you should make a sturdy lens case that will offer more protection.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and diameter of your lens. Write these numbers down and add 2 inches to the length and diameter measurements. You will want to have some extra space around your lens.

    • 2

Find a hard plastic container either in your home or at a local department store that matches or is slightly larger than the measurements for your lens. It is acceptable If the container is larger than the measurements. If the container is very large, use it for two lenses.

    • 3

Buy a block of foam that will fit inside the container but still allow the top of the container to be attached. Foam can be found at a number of craft retailers. Place the lens on the side of the foam that will represent the top when it is placed into the container. Use a pencil to score the outline of the lens on the foam.

    • 4

Use a utility knife and create a cutout that replicates the dimensions of the lens in the foam block. Place the lens inside the cutout to confirm that it fits. Remove the lens and place the foam inside the container.

    • 5

Place the lens inside the cutout and secure the container by replacing the lid. A large elastic band can be used to ensure that the lid is secure.
