How to Photograph a Pack of Cigarettes

Product photography requires photographers to position and illuminate the product so it is captured in a way that will attract viewers. This applies to any type of product photography, including photographs of a pack of cigarettes. When shooting a pack of cigarettes, photographers need to contend with a small package that has a reflective surface and basic design. When done correctly, the cigarette pack should be in focus, well lit and shot in a creative way that will please your client.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your table or display where the cigarette package will be positioned. If you have a single package of cigarettes, consider using a stand or other support that will hold the pack on one its edges.

    • 2

Position one studio light to the side of the cigarette package so the light is directed toward the most dominant side in the picture. This will be your main light. Turn the light on and set the power to full.

    • 3

Position a second studio light on the other side of the cigarette package, this will be your fill light. Turn the light on and set the power for this light at half the power of the main light.

    • 4

Attach the camera to a tripod and place it in a shooting position 2 to 3 feet in front of the package of cigarettes. Connect the sync cord to the camera and take a test shot. Review the picture and adjust the lights if there was a reflection in the image of the cigarette package. Take a second shot. Once you are pleased with the lighting set up, proceed with the shoot, trying different angles and positions for the cigarette package.
