How to Connect an Umbrella to a Nikon SB600

The Nikon Speedlight SB600 is compact external flash unit designed to work with Nikon DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras. The SB600 features a tilting and rotatable flash head, and it can be used with a number of flashes for indoor photography. When used indoors, using the SB600 with a studio light umbrella will produce a softer and evenly distributed light on your subjects. While the SB600 is too small and not designed to have an umbrella attached to it, you can use it with a light stand.

Instructions

    • 1

Extend a studio light stand and connect a hotshoe adapter to the top of the light stand. The Nikon SB600 connects to a camera by sliding onto the camera's hotshoe. The hotshoe adapter you connect to the top of the light stand will allow you to slide the SB600 onto the stand and attach an umbrella as well.

    • 2

Slide the SB600 onto the hotshoe adapter and turn the locking switch located near the base of the SB600 to secure it in place. Turn the SB600 on and toggle through the menus and select "Wireless ETTL" for the exposure mode. This will place the flash into the mode that will receive exposure information from you Nikon DSLR via wireless transmitter or a SB800 connected to the camera.

Unfold and extend the studio umbrella. Loosen the knob on the hotshoe attachment into which the umbrella post slides. Insert the umbrella post until the umbrella is 12 to 18 inches away from the front of the SB600 flash head. Tighten the knob and your SB600 is ready to be used with a studio umbrella.
