How to Build a Portfolio for Digital Photography School

When applying to a digital photography school, students are required to submit a portfolio that displays their work. Oftentimes, acceptance to a program is based on the quality of this portfolio and the photos it contains. To create a good printed portfolio that will guarantee your acceptance, be sure to include your best work. Display it in a clean, crisp and organized way so that the acceptance committee can focus on your photos.

Instructions

    • 1

Select your best pieces of work that you would like to have displayed in your portfolio---usually between 45 and 70 pictures is a good range. Have them printed in large, high quality formats that will fit inside the pages of your portfolio book.

    • 2

Organize the pieces of work into various sections. For example, separate your wedding photography from your family portraits.

    • 3

Design any title pages that will separate the sections of your books. Since the focus should be on the pictures and not on the titles, be sure the titles are clean, and crisp in design so as not to distract from the work.

    • 4

Insert the photographs into your book, and separate the sections with title pages. Since plastic sleeves get scratched easily, try to find a book that allows you to put the photographs directly inside.

    • 5

Personalize the cover of the book by adding your name, business and contact information. This will prevent your book from getting lost amongst the competition and, should it become lost, will make it easier for someone to return it to you.

    • 6

Keep your photography up to date by choosing a style of book that has interchangeable pages. This will allow you to take out your old work and replace it with new photographs. Also, you can remove any creased or dirty pages without having to re-do the entire portfolio.
