Parts of a Photo Album

While photo albums may be becoming a thing of the past, many people still use them today. It is important to understand the parts of the photo album so that you can properly place your treasured pictures, allowing them to be stored safely and securely for years to come.
  1. Cover

    • The cover of a photo album will differ, depending on the type of album you have. Some photo albums have a place to put a picture to represent the rest of your album. If the album is about your family, for example, choose a nice picture of your family to remind you of what's inside. Other photo albums simply have a hard front cover that may or may not have decorations on it.

    Pages

    • Older photo album pages were made out of a material like construction paper, and it was easy to rip pages by accident. Modern photo albums are sometimes made with plastic pages, which protects the pictures better and prevents accidental tears. The plastic coating also prevents pictures from being ruined or soiled if someone spills something on them.

    Picture Holders

    • Albums can have different types of picture holders. Some have plastic sleeves that let you slip in a picture and keep it protected. These are often cut for a specific photo size. Other albums have a plastic film that can be pulled back and replaced over the pictures. Older photo albums have paper holders that keep pictures in place.

    Labels

    • Some photo albums come with labels. These labels can be placed underneath pictures to add a caption or to describe who is in the pictures. Albums with plastic covers that can be folded back are typically sticky on the inside, allowing you to place your own labels underneath the photos. Other albums have indexes that you can fill out, pointing the reader to the correct photos.
