How to Recover Photos From a Media Stick

Pictures that are photographed using digital cameras are not saved on film, but rather are saved to a compact flash memory card, an SD memory card or a media stick. Images saved to these storage devices stay there until the physical space they occupy is used to save a new image. This is why images that are accidentally deleted can be recovered even though you can no longer view the images on your camera LCD screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop using the media stick as soon as you realize you have accidentally deleted the image or completely formatted the card.

    • 2

Turn on your home computer and connect to the Internet using the program you normally use. Download a free or trial version of image recovery software to your computer. Programs like PixFix and Smart Image Recovery are designed for computers running Windows; CameraSalvage is designed for Mac users.

    • 3

Open the program you just downloaded. Insert the media stick into a card reader and wait a moment for your computer to acknowledge the new storage device.

    • 4

Click "Start/Scan" in the recovery program and select the drive port that contains the media stick with the deleted pictures on it.

    • 5

Click the file icon representing the deleted picture in the new window that will open once the recovery program has completed its scan. Save the deleted picture to your computer's hard drive.
