Freelance Photography Techniques

Freelance photography is the term assigned to photographers who are self-employed and send their work to newspapers, magazines and other publications. A photographer may choose to work as a freelancer so he retains ownership of the images he creates, which allows the images to be sold multiple times to different sources. Photographers shooting this type of work need to be aware of the type of pictures magazines and newspapers publish.

Sports
- Community and regional newspapers always have a need for pictures of local sports. If you want to submit sports pictures to these publications the image should capture a pivotal point in the game or the winning touchdown, run, goal or point. Shooting sports requires the photographer to aware of the game and the players involved in it. Knowing who the better players are is one way to ensure you are following the individual who may be involved in the play that is the highlight of the game.
Street Photography
- Commonly associated with the black-and-white images that often appear in "Life" magazine and similar publications, street photography is finding interesting pictures that happen every day in your city or town. These pictures are captured a couple different ways. If you are able to spend time on a regular basis taking pictures in the area, the people become used to seeing you there and become accustomed to you taking pictures. This allows you to take pictures while close to the subject. If you need to be more subtle, then photographing this way can be done using a telephoto lens that will allow you to shoot from a distance.
Breaking News
- Newspapers and news magazines need these type of images. By the nature of the event, it is not always possible for news publications to send staff photographers to events all the time. When shooting breaking news, capture a picture that will convey the entire story in one image. Your technique should have you working as close as possible to the event without putting yourself in any danger or impacting the event in any way. When shooting breaking news, it is also important to collect as much information as possible for the cutline that will accompany the picture.
Special Events or Holiday Events
- Easter egg hunts, Independence Day events and other holiday celebrations provide opportunities for freelance photographers to shoot and potentially earn money from their pictures. The pictures should be colorful and have people doing something in the picture. You technique should allow you to create a picture that will isolate your subject from the number of other people who are at the event. Using a shallow depth of field is one way to have you subject stand out.
