Winter Portrait Session Ideas

Family portraits can help to preserve memories, no matter what time of year they are taken. The onset of winter does not mean that outside portraits have to be put on hold. With the right setting and background, winter portraits can be just as beautiful as portraits taken in the warmer seasons. While winter photographs can be taken in a studio setting, taking outdoor photographs will better display the winter season to the viewer.
  1. Christmas Themes

    • While Christmas portraits are a common theme during the winter season, a touch of creativity can create innovative photographs. Place the subject in front of a background, such as a Christmas tree or fireplace, or under mistletoe. Use fun props, such as cookies, presents or ornaments, to add a point of interest to the photograph.

    Wooded Trails

    • If there has been a heavy snow fall recently, take the subjects out to a wooded walking trail. The snow on the ground and on the tree limbs will create a beautiful photograph. A subject can be placed with her back resting against a tree, or candid shots of the subjects walking down a trail can be taken.

    Snowman Family

    • A playful portrait idea is to have a family build snowmen. Each member of the family can build a snowman, adding props and clothing to represent themselves. Position the family behind their snowmen for the photo.

    Action Shots

    • A great way to have the subject or subjects interact with the camera is to take action shots. After it has snowed, take them outside. They can be photographed sledding or having a snowball fight. Taking candid shots works best in this situation. Candid shots will create a much more heartfelt, realistic photograph.
