• If you are storing your photos in a box, make sure that the box is kept somewhere that it is not going to be exposed to moisture or excessive heat. The elements can cause photos to become warped or damaged. Your boxes should be stored off the ground, such as the rack of a closet or an upper shelf, where the temperature will remain steady. A basement or garage may not be the best idea for storing your photo boxes, unless you have a dehumidifier running consistently.

Methods of Organization

• You should organize your pictures in your photo box so that you can find them easily. There are a lot of easy ways to do this. Organize them chronologically by person, in years or decades to make your task easier. The pictures could also be organized by holiday or special event, such as graduation. If you have a large family, you could organize your pictures by person. If you have a lot of photos of each person, you could use two or more of these methods to best be able to find your pictures easily.

• When you are placing photographs into your photo storage box, you want to keep them organized as well as possible. To do so, it may be a good idea to separate your photo categories using index cards with tabs that you can personalize. These tabs should stick out far enough that you can see the tabs easily. This will make getting to the picture that you are looking for easily. You should also use photo boxes that allow you to insert a plaque stating the type of pictures stored inside the box.

Storage

• When creating your organized photo box, make sure that you are only using photographs that are going to be stored for a long period of time. Photo boxes, especially when they are used in a large volume, can make it difficult to find specific pictures. They are meant to be stored over a long period of time, so you should buy quality boxes that will last a long time. If you are not sure whether you are going to be using your pictures in your future, separate them into a different box so you can find them easily.
