How to Recover Permanently Deleted Pictures

Digital technology has changed the way photos are recorded and saved. These advancements have made it easier to review pictures as soon as we take them; it has also increased the chances of permanently deleting a picture that you meant to save. Recovering pictures that you have permanently deleted from a memory card or a camera's internal memory can be done, but you need to do a few things first.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with Internet connection
  • Memory card reader

Instructions

    • 1

Stop using the camera or change the memory card as soon as you notice you have deleted the picture. When you delete a single picture, or format a memory card to remove all the pictures, the files are still on the card or in the camera's memory and will remain there until the physical memory space is used to save a new picture.

    • 2

Turn your home computer on, connect to the Internet and download a photo recovery program. Programs available for downloading include PixFix Image Recovery, PC Smart Picture Recovery and, for Mac users, Camera Salvage.

    • 3

Open the program you downloaded. Insert the memory card into your computer's card reader or an external card reader that is connected to your computer, or connect the camera to your computer.

    • 4

Click "Scan/Start" in the navigation bar of the program you downloaded and click the icon that identifies the memory card you inserted or the camera connected to the computer.

    • 5

Click the picture that was deleted from the window that will appear when the recovery program completes the scan. Save the picture to your computer's drive.
