How to Recover Photos From an Erased Disk

In the days where the use of film photography was the norm, pictures where recorded on color or black and white film that was sensitive to light. In the digital age, pictures are now recorded onto a disc or memory card. Once a picture is processed into a film negative, it stays there for years to come. Digital pictures, however, can be accidentally deleted from a disc. If that happens, you can still recover the pictures using a free program like PixFix Free Photo Recovery or PC Inspector Smart Recovery. For Mac users, Camera Salvage will recover lost pictures.

Instructions

  As soon as you realize you have accidentally erased a picture off the camera's memory disc, stop using the camera and turn it off. While you can no longer view the picture, the file is still on the disc and will remain there until the physical space it occupies is used to save a new photo.

  Connect your camera to a computer using a USB cable or similar cable that came with your camera. Turn on your computer on, connect to the Internet and download one of the three programs listed in the Introduction.

  On your computer, open the program you just downloaded. Click "File" and select "Scan/Start" from the new drop down menu. Click the icon that represents the camera you have connected to the computer, and click "OK."

  Review the images that the program recovers from the disc in the new window that opens up once the scan has been completed.

  Right click the icon that represents the digital picture that was deleted and save the erased picture your computer's hard drive. Remember where you saved it so you can retrieve the photo later.
