DIY Backdrop

It's crucial to have a convincing photography backdrop when shooting in a studio. By creating a backdrop on your own, you cut out the cost of buying a backdrop from a specialty store. You also have the ability to use whichever color you wish. The color and type of fabric you chose will depend on the type of lighting you will be using and the type of photo you wish to produce. A stand will also need to be created for your backdrop.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy around five yards of muslin at a local specialty store. The muslin should be as wide as possible. The color of fabric will not matter since you will dye it later.

    • 2

Measure out the amount of muslin you will need for the backdrop, keeping in mind the length needed to reach to the floor. Use a pencil and a ruler to cut the fabric evenly. Cut the muslin. Place a strip of no-sew fusible tape on each side. Fold the cut edges of the fabric over the tape, and iron the edges.

    • 3

Mix water and the color of dye you wish to use in a large bucket, following the directions on the dye package. Wear gloves when dying the fabric. Be careful; the dye will stain anything that it touches.

    • 4

Place the muslin in the bucket of dye. Stir every so often for around 30 minutes so the muslin will dye evenly. Then lay out the muslin on a patch of grass or somewhere dye stains aren't an issue. Hanging the fabric on a clothesline will also work.

    • 5

Create two standing frames on each side of the frame's base by using a PVC pipe and two three-way PVC connectors. Connect the base to appropriately sized PVC. Use a wire to secure the muslin to the frame. The muslin can fall loosely or hang tightly depending on what type of backdrop you are looking for.
