Things You'll Need
Instructions
Measure the opening on the back of the frame to get the exact dimensions for the area where the picture will sit. Measure the dimensions of your picture to ensure that the picture will fit inside the frame, as well as inside the mat. Remember that you'll need at least one to two inches on all sides of the mat, and that the mat and the picture all have to fit in the frame (see reference 1).
Center the picture on the mat. Place a ruler along the edges and trace around the picture with a pencil to get a straight edge. Measure the edges and mark any mat board that exceeds one or two inches, depending on your desired width. Trim off any excess mat from the edges so that you have a one to two inch width on all sides of the mat (see reference 1).
Place a T-square against the mat board on the corner of the area to be cut. Use your cutter in a pulling motion to cut along the edge of the T-square, ensuring a straight cut. Repeat the process on the other four lines until you can pop the middle out of the mat (see reference 1).
Place the mat into the frame to make sure it fits. Take it out and center it over the photo to ensure that no space is showing between the photo and the edges of the mat (see reference 1).
Place the mat back in the frame. with beveled cut facing out, and place a few pieces of tape along the edge back of the mat to hold it to the frame. Place the photo inside, make sure it is straight and put a few pieces of tape on the back of the photo to hold it to the mat (see reference 1).
