DIY: Seamless Backdrop Photography

Photographers use backdrops to create a background that will not compete with the subject when the viewer is looking at the picture. One technique is to use a "seamless backdrop" that gives the impression the subject is floating in its location. Seamless backdrops can be any color, but are most commonly used with a white or black background. Creating a seamless backdrop requires both correct accessories and the correct lighting to achieve the effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang a roll of white paper backdrop to a backdrop stand. These rolls are available in varying width and length depending on the type of photography you are using.

    • 2

Adjust the backdrop stand so that is taller than the subject being photographed.

    • 3

Unroll the white paper backdrop until it hits the floor and you can pull it forward, creating a place for the subject to be positioned on. The paper should not be folded when it touches the floor, but should sustain a small slope that will hide this contact spot. This is part of creating the seamless portion of the backdrop.

    • 4

Position your subject and light the subject appropriately. Once lit, write down the exposure of the main/key light that is on the subject.

    • 5

Position two studio lights, one on either side of the back drop, at a 45-degree angle to the backdrop and direct the light toward the backdrop.

    • 6

Set the power level on these two lights so they are one full stop brighter than the main light on the subject. If the main light on the subject reads f5.6, then the light should read f4.0 for the lights shining on the backdrop. This combination of brighter light and allowing the paper to curl when it touches the floor will create a seamless backdrop in your pictures.
