How to Get a Photo Published in a Newspaper

In addition to articles, newspapers need photos to run in their papers. Newspapers provide readers with a daily source of information from their neighborhood and from around the world. While they receive pictures from their own photographers and from new agencies, it is not possible for newspaper staff to cover every event. If you have a picture from an event that you think the newspaper may be interested in, you can try to get it published.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the photo or news editor at the paper you want to sell your picture to. Tell them about the event, what happened at the event, and the type of picture you have. Tell them who is in the picture and what is happening in the picture.

    • 2

Ask for their email address or FTP (File Transfer Protocol) address, and how they prefer to receive picture submissions. Newspapers generally publish at 200 dots per inch (DPI) and do not require the same DPI of magazines. Ask for the dimensions they want the picture to be, and size of the file required.

    • 3

Edit the picture to match the dimensions. Click "File" and "Properties" from the drop-down menu in your image-editing software. In the "Comments" section, type your cutline for the picture. A cutline includes the "Who," "What," "Where," "Why," and "When" details. This is the information that newspapers need for pictures.

    • 4

Save the photo as a new file and attach the picture to an email or send it using an FTP program. FTP allows a large number of pictures to be sent at one time. If you are only sending one picture, the newspaper may just want it sent via email.

    • 5

Call the news or photo editor again to confirm that they received the picture. Confirm any details they may have questions about. If they are interested in buying the picture, negotiate the price. Create and send an invoice to the same email address right away.

Pick up a copy of the paper the next day to see your picture published.
