Editing Program
Install your preferred editing program on your computer. Adobe offers a free, 30-day trial of their software Adobe Photoshop, one of the more popular photo editors. Some photo image programs that are always free include GIMP, Google Picasa and Photos Pos Pro.
Open the photo editing program and familiarize yourself with some of the features. Some editing programs feature bare-bones editing information, with tools to crop, recolor and resize, while others have more in-depth options for editing.
Open the photo you wish to edit using the photo editing program. Usually, this is done from the File menu in the program, which then asks you to select your photo from its location. Some programs feature a designated one-click button that will open photos rather than searching through the menu.
Edit your photo to correct the problems you need to fix. If your photo is too dark, for example, use the brightness adjustment feature of your photo software program. For smoother skin, try airbrushing or using a blur tool. Editing programs allow you to alter your photo's brightness, clarity, size or a number of other options.
Online Resource
Choose an online photo editing resource that fits your needs. A multitude of online photo editors exist, ranging from simple uploading and resizing to Photoshop-like tweaking. Websites like Phixr, Lunapic and Snipshot allow you to edit your photos for free online. Some sites may require a free account for photo editing.
Upload your photo to the website using the site's upload form. This will bring a copy of your photo up in the browser window.
Edit your photo using the tools given on the website. Once you're done making changes to your photo, the website allows you to save your edited version as a new file to keep from overriding the original image.
