How to Add Text to Digital Photos for Free

The addition of text complements a digital image. A line of text can serve a practical or instructive purpose. In example, if the photo depicts a very busy or chaotic scene, such as a street protest or a sports play, an added caption can help clarify what's happening for the viewer. Text can also be used creatively or for artistic reasons. A relevant poem or quotation can turn a picture of a sunset into a piece of art.

  Transfer your digital photos onto your computer from your camera's media storage card. Alternatively, you may use a USB cable to transfer your images. Remember where the files are saved.

  Find a free online image editor; many are available. Most editor interfaces are straightforward, requiring only that you upload the image to the site before beginning to add text.

  Upload your image to the online editor by selecting the "Choose File" button and browsing to where the image files are saved. Once the image is uploaded, you will be redirected to an editing interface. A number of different image editing tools will be available to you.

  Select the "Text" function from the toolbar and click the area of the image you wish to add text to.

  Type your desired line of text. Change the text font size, color, or appearance (italic, bold, underlined) using the appropriate icons on the toolbar.
