Techniques With Photography Film

Photography is the art of capturing a moment in time as a single still image. While the concept seems simple, the photographer can employ many techniques to change the way a photograph looks when it is developed on paper. Photographers using a traditional film camera can use filters, different exposure and shutter speeds, lenses and equipment, such as tripods, to alter the way their photos turn out.
  1. Filters

    • Camera filters are essentially a thin piece of colored plastic or glass that is screwed over the top of a camera lens. Many different types of filters are available for both film and digital cameras. Filters are used to alter the color of a given photograph. Several techniques can be achieved using filters; one example is to use a polarizing filter when taking a portrait of scenery. Polarizing filters are useful because they enhance the color blue (for example, the sky) and give the colors in the photograph more contrast.

    Aperture and Shutter Speed

    • Adjusting the aperture and exposure settings on your film camera is a technique used to change the entire outcome of your photo. The aperture and exposure are both used to control how much light enters the camera, which affects how bright or dark your photo turns out. Shooting with an aperture of f /2.8 allows a lot of light to enter the camera, and can be used as a technique for shooting a subject when you want the subject to be in focus and the background to be blurry. Shutter speed can also be used as a technique for freezing motion; when you choose a fast shutter speed, you can freeze objects or people in mid-motion.

    Lenses

    • Many different lenses can be use with a film camera to achieve certain techniques. For example; a macro lens allows you to shoot items in very close detail. Fish-eye lenses add a warped appearance to your photograph, and wide-angle lenses can be used to distort certain features of your subject. Lenses can be used to create many photography techniques, and certain lenses are better for certain types of photography.

    Tripods

    • Tripods can enhance your photography technique, as they keep the camera perfectly still, eliminating camera shake from your hands or breathing. Tripods are used to shoot a photograph with a very slow shutter speed. Because the camera is mounted perfectly still, the photo captures the subject of the photo, blurring the motion. This can be used to capture pictures of moving cars, people, and is used to shoot waterfalls. Tripods can also be used to get a crisp night photograph, as there is no motion when the picture is shot, and the shutter can be open long enough to expose lights in darkness.
