Tools
There are many tools you can use to cut a photo mat. A measuring tape and a T square are essential tools for making the straight cuts the correct size. If you rarely cut mats, you can use a sharp craft knife to make the cuts. A hand-held mat cutter, which makes it easier to make straight cuts, is the next step up for mat cutting. A professional mat cutter often uses a table-top mat cutter to make precise cuts for any size of mat. Some professional studios use a computerized mat cutter; this makes the cuts from a computer program and can make any size or shape of mat.
Sizes
The mat size you use for your photo or art really depends on how formal you want the image to look. The larger the matting, the more formal the photo or picture appears. Use larger mats for artistic photos; use a smaller and more typical 1- or 2-inch mat for informal pictures and photos. The outside edges of the mat should be able to fit into a standard frame size, no matter the size of the opening inside.
Cutting Process
Cutting a mat opening is a simple process. You start by measuring the size of the picture or photo you want to place inside the mat. The edges of the opening can be marked with a T square and a pencil. Cut out the inside of the mat slightly beyond the frame edges to enable the insert to fall out easily. Measure the size of the frame that you want to use with the mat and photo. Cut the outside edges to fit this frame.
Colors and Textures
Changing the color and texture of the border mat can change the appearance and formality of your picture or photo. Use bright or bold colors to make the piece stand out. White mats look formal and sophisticated. If you choose a colored mat, use a color that is present inside the photo for a cohesive appearance with the photo. Use different textures of mat to add visual interest. Engraved mats add an elegant touch; patterned mats add a touch of whimsy.
