How Does One Mat a Picture?

Creating a mat for a photograph before you frame it ensures that the display will endure over time. The mat will keep the glass of the frame from pressing against the photo, allowing air to circulate and preventing the photo from decaying. A mat is easy to make and will make your photograph displays more attractive.

Things You'll Need

  • Picture frame (larger than photograph)

Instructions

  1. Matting a Photograph

    • 1

Separate the back of the picture frame from the glass and the frame. Place the frame back face-side up flat on your work surface. Place the frame and glass to the side.

    • 2

Lay your photograph, picture face up, in the middle of the frame back.

    • 3

Place your pre-cut mat over the photograph, laying it down on the frame back. Ensure that the photograph is properly showing through the opening in the mat.

    • 4

Place the glass and frame over the mat. Turn the matted and framed photograph over to secure the frame closed.
