Tips for Portrait Photography

Effective portraiture can speak volumes about a subject. In capturing a hearty laugh, wry grin or penetrating gaze, the photo can convey the essence of an individual. Whether you're photographing your mother or a stranger, you can add punch to your portraiture.
  1. Make it Environmental

    • Environmental portraits are photographs that depict subjects as an active part of their setting. By including fragments of this setting, you help to inform the viewer about the person pictured. For example, if you are shooting a portrait of a steelworker, you might want to frame the portrait by including several rigid support beams in the background. Include enough of the setting to provide visual context, but not so much that it distracts from your subject.

    Be Candid

    • Candid shots tend to be more intimate--and humorous.

Although deliberate posing often results in good formal portraits, a more organic photo can be achieved by shooting candidly. Waiting for a subject to be caught up in a moment -- whether it be a fit of laughter or concentration during a game of chess -- is useful when attempting to capture them naturally.

    Look for Soft Light

    • Shooting in slightly overcast light or open shade makes for soft, flattering portraiture. In these lighting conditions, skin appears smooth, soft and luminescent. Avoid harsh sunlight (typically during midday hours) because it casts harsh shadows on the face and causes subjects to squint.

    Talk Through Your Viewfinder

    • Become friends with your subjects as you photograph them.

Conversing with your subjects is an excellent way to put them at ease as you take photographs. Telling jokes, asking about their day or discussing current events helps create a friendly banter between you and the person you're photographing. This tactic usually provides natural-looking results and is an effective way to break the ice when photographing strangers.
