Things You'll Need
Instructions
Spread a large white sheet or section of paper on the ground. Ensure that the sheet or paper is free of all dirt, stains and smudging.
Lay the clothing in the center of the sheet or paper. Position the garment as desired and smooth out all folds or wrinkles with your hands.
Plug in an adjustable lamp and position its head so that it lights the clothing from the top. For more light, use an additional lamp or bulb with higher watt value.
Open an umbrella and have an assistant hold it directly behind the lamp's head. This will help soften the light and result in smoother color tones and less shadowing.
Compose the shot by climbing several steps of a small ladder -- this will likely be necessary if the focal length of your lens is greater than 35mm. This will allow you to fit the entire garment into your camera's frame. Alternatively, you may use a wide angle lens -- focal lengths less than 35mm -- during the shoot.
Place reflector panels near any part of the garment that is deeply shadowed. This will help lighten shadowing and preserve detail in the clothing. Panels can be purchased at any photography store, or made from pieces of cardboard and aluminum foil.
