How to Focus a Camera in the Dark

Almost all modern cameras work with an autofocus system. This system relies on having enough light for the sensor to detect enough contrast difference on the subject to focus the lens correctly. When there is enough light, these systems work very well. When there is little or no light at all, then the challenge to taking pictures is how to focus your lens in the dark. With a little bit of practice, it can be done.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the camera very still and try to use the autofocusing system. These programs will emit either an infrared beam or a red beam of light that allows the lens to focus. Even in the lowest possible light, these will work in most cases. If you are using a point and shoot camera, you can also try to activate the built-in flash that will assist in focusing the lens.

    • 2

Switch the lens to manual focus by sliding the "AF/MF" switch on the side of lens to "MF."

    • 3

Attach the camera and lens to a tripod so you have a fixed shooting position. Since you are taking this picture in the dark, the exposure time will likely be long. You will need a tripod to keep the camera steady during exposure.

    • 4

Measure the distance from the camera to the subject using a tape measure or by walking the distance.

    • 5

Turn the external focusing ring until the lens is set to that distance. Press the shutter release to take the picture.
