IR Scan Instructions

Infrared (IR) film records light that is not visible to the naked eye. The results you get from Infrared film photography can create images that have a very storybook quality to them. Skies turn black, trees and other foliage appear in different shades of white. Scanning this type of film can be done using the same equipment you would use to scan traditional film and slide film.

Film scanner capable of scanning IR film

Instructions

  Turn your computer and negative scanner on. Open the software for your scanner and in the "Preferences" or "Film type" menu select "IR" or "Infrared film" as the type of film you are scanning.

  Create a new folder where the scanned images will be saved to.

  Prepare the IR film for scanning by carefully cleaning it using an anti-static cloth. This specially treated cloth is designed to remove dust and other debris from the negative and help to prevent dust collecting on the negative during the scanning process.

  Place the negative strip into the film holder. Place the film holder into the scanner and press the "Scan" button. You can also click "Scan" in the software to start the process.

  Review the image in the preview screen that will appear on your computer screen. Just about all dedicated negative scanners and their software have this feature that allows you to review the image before it is scanned.

  Click "Ok" after you have reviewed the frame you are scanning.

  Save the scanned image as a "TIFF" file. While this version is larger then JPEG images, the resolution is increased and will give you more information to work with when you are editing the picture in the future.
