Things You'll Need
Instructions
Adjust the properties of the background using a combination of masking tools and adjustments. You can create a brighter background or desaturate the background completely to make it black and white so it will look interesting in contrast to the foreground subject. You might find your background more interesting by making a change as simple as heightening the exposure level. Apply an artistic filter or effect to the background to make it appear surreal, highlighting the realistic properties of the foreground.
Select and remove the background and replace it with a photograph or digital image of something else. If there is nothing but gray sky in your background, you might want to substitute in a forest scene or put your foreground subjects on the moon. You can achieve this in most photographic editing programs by carefully selecting the background with a selection tool and deleting it, then placing a new image in a layer beneath the layer with the foreground subjects.
Use your program's painting or drawing functions to create a mixed-media background, with elements of the actual photograph combined with your own graffiti art or brushed flourishes. This can enhance the function of the background elements and serve as a canvas for new art to frame your foreground subjects.
