How to Take a Photo of a Slide on a Screen

You're in the middle of an important slide show, such as a series of old family photographs or a classmate's presentation on the healthcare industry, and feel the need to capture the image on the screen. Because the room is often dim during slide presentations, the typical point and shoot method of photography will result in a blurred, light-streaked mess. But there are ways to capture the slide in the way that you originally saw it on the screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Increase your camera's ISO (sensor sensitivity) to 1600. On most cameras, you can do this by pressing "MENU" while in shooting mode. A high ISO setting is integral for clear, properly exposed photos in dim lighting. It also allows you to use a range of faster shutter speeds.

    • 2

Change the camera's white balance from "Auto" or "Sunny" to "Indoors" or "Fluorescent." This will ensure that the slide's colors are captured accurately by the camera. Press the "MENU" button to alter white balance.

    • 3

Set the camera to shutter priority mode (typically represented as "S" on mode selector dials and "Tv" on LCD screen menus) and change the shutter speed to 1/100 or 1/250--fast enough to prevent any camera shake or blurring of the screen. The camera automatically selects the appropriate aperture (size of lens opening) to allow enough light to reach the camera's sensor.

    • 4

Switch from auto focus to manual focus. It is difficult for most cameras to focus accurately (especially on images or words projected upon a screen) in dim lighting, so focusing the lens yourself ensures crisp, sharp results.

    • 5

Look through the viewfinder and compose the image. Move around or change seats in order to fill the frame with the photo on the screen.

    • 6

Press the shutter gently to take the picture. Check the results in your camera's LCD preview screen.
