How to Make Four Separate Wall Hangings out of One Enlarged Photo

You don't have to look too hard to find a variety of ways to add art to your home. One approach to creating four separate but related hanging art pieces is to take a large photo and create four smaller, individual photos from it. In creating the separate prints, you can make all four equal sizes, or you can make different-sized prints. If you decide to create different-sized prints, make sure they will each fit into premade mats and frames.

Things You'll Need

  • Photo trimmer, or cutting board and utility knife
  • Ruler or straight edge
  • Picture frames
  • Photo mats (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Order a large enough print so you can create four prints that will be big enough to be visible from across the room. If you have an 11-by-14-inch print, you would be able to create four individual 5-by-7-inch prints.

    • 2

Use a photo trimmer to cut your image into four individual prints. A photo trimmer will provide a straight and even cut. Alternatively, use a cutting board and an extremely sharp utility knife to cut the photograph. If you choose to use a cutting board and utility knife, be sure to use a ruler or straight edge to make a straight cut.

Insert the four individual prints into their own frames. You can also use photographic mats, which create a border around the picture. Note that using a mat also increases the size of the frame, which will take up more space on your wall. If, for example, you have 5-by-7-inch pictures, these traditionally go into a mat that then fits an 8-by-10-inch frame.

Hang the four pictures on your wall, arranging them so they look like the original picture, or separate them to create a different effect.
