How to Create a Backdrop With Sheer Fabric

When used correctly, a backdrop can add a lot to your photography. If used incorrectly, it can not only deter from your work, but overpower the subject in the image. Creating a backdrop using sheer fabric will give your photos a very soft and gentle look. This type of background is good for a number of different photo styles, from children's portraits to fine art. You can also add different colored lighting to your sheer backdrop.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out the width for your backdrop and double it. If you have a need for an eight foot backdrop, buy 16 feet of material. Unlike dark backgrounds that you do not want to see, a sheer fabric background will be visible and looks better if it is draped or collected across the back of your photo as opposed to straight flat backdrop.

    • 2

Lay the backdrop on ground measure four inches from the top, fold the four inches in half and sew across the entire length to create a loop for your backdrop stand.

    • 3

Insert the cross pole of backdrop stand through the loop you created. Attach the cross pole to side stand and erect the backdrop.

    • 4

Collect the backdrop so it creates a textured or ruffled look.

    • 5

Place lights at both the right and left side of the backdrop and direct the light onto the sheer backdrop to give it some definition. You can use the same colored light or various colors. You can also add a light behind the sheer backdrop, directed towards the backdrop this will further enhance the look of the backdrop.
