How to Take a Photo of a Glass-Covered Painting

When you want to capture a famous painting in a photo, the glass pane protecting it can become a nuisance. Glare from overhead lamps and reflections from outside light can ruin your photo. If you want to avoid the glare, you have to take the same precautions you would when shooting elsewhere through glass, as in the aquarium or zoo or museum, in street photography or in taking pictures of window displays.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid using flash, as it will only result in a square of glare. The light will bounce right off of the glass and back into the camera, blocking the painting completely.

    • 2

Make the most of available light. Set your camera's ISO higher and widen your lens opening (aperture) when shooting indoors. This will allow you to take clear, blur-free photos in low-light situations.

    • 3

      Use a tripod.

    • 4

Use a polarizing filter. Screw a filter of the correct size onto the end of your camera's lens, rotate it until reflections are nearly nonexistent and take the shot. These filters help diffuse refracted light that would otherwise ruin your photo.
