How to Adjust the Size of a Photo

The size of digital pictures can be changed using a number of different editing programs. Whether the software you use is one you purchased like Adobe Photoshop or free versions like GIMP and Paint.net, changing the size of the picture is an easy process. Once you have changed the picture size, you can save it for printing at a later date. When changing photo sizes, you should save the altered picture as a separate file; this will keep the original digital photo as your digital negative.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the photo editing program you have selected to use on your home computer. Locate and open the picture you want to change.

    • 2

Click "Image" and select "Resize" and "Image size" from the new window the navigation bar of the program you are using.

    • 3

Change the "width" value to match the size of the print you want to make. If you click on "Constrain proportions," the software will automatically calculate the "length" of the print to match the "width" setting you selected. These terms are used in Adobe's Photoshop program. With GIMP and Paint.net, being free versions similar to Adobe Photoshop, the wording might be slightly different.

    • 4

Click "OK." The software will make the changes to your photo.

    • 5

Click "File" and select "Save as" from the drop-down menu, give your edited photo a new name or add a suffix to the file name to identify the altered photo and save the photo back to your "Pictures" folder.
