How to Erase a Photo Card After Importing Pictures

With the advent of digital technology and its impact on photography, long gone are the days of shooting a roll of film and taking it in to be processed. Today we shoot pictures in the afternoon and download them to our computers when we get home. Depending on the type of software you are using to transfer your digital pictures to your home computer, they can be copied to your computer. If the memory card is full, it will need to be erased before you can use it for new photos.

Instructions

  1. Deleting Via Computer

    • 1

Insert your memory card into your computer's card reader or into an external card reader connected to your computer. Allow the photos to download to your computer as normal.

    • 2

Click "My computer," and select the icon that represents the memory card that is inserted into the card reader.

    • 3

Click on one of the pictures inside the folder. Press and hold the "CTRL" key on your computer's keyboard and at the same time press the letter "A." This will select all of the pictures inside the folder.

    • 4

Press the "Delete" button on your keyboard. All the images on the card will be deleted and your card will be ready to be used once again.

    Reformatting Memory Card

    • 5

Insert the memory card into your camera after you have downloaded the pictures to your computer but have not deleted them off the card.

    • 6

Press the "Menu" button on the back of your camera. Scroll through the menu selections and select "Format."

    • 7

Click "Format card" from your camera's menu. The camera's LCD screen will present a decision box asking you to confirm that you want to erase all the pictures on the card. Press the "OK/Yes" button. Your camera will reformat the card, removing all previous pictures and preparing the card to be used again.
