How to Transfer Slides to a DVD Scanner

Color slide film is known for its accuracy in color reproduction and can often be purchased at lower film speeds than print film. The lower film speed allows for increased color saturation of the scene being photographed. Transferring slides to a DVD first requires them to be scanned and converted to digital files. Once done, the scanned slides can be edited, emailed or uploaded to websites.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your slides for scanning by carefully cleaning them using an anti-static cloth. This specially treated cloth will remove dust and debris from your slides and help prevent dust from collecting on the slide during the scanning process.

    • 2

Turn your computer and scanner on. Open the scanning software and set up the folder where the slides will be scanned to. Click on "Settings" in the navigation bar to set the parameters for saving your slides after they have been scanned. It is a good idea to save them as "TIFF" files. While these files are larger than JPEGs they can be used as digital negatives where you can edit and then save the edited version as JPEG for printing or emailing. Depending on the scanner and software you are using, the wording might be different in the navigation bar. There is in all scanning programs the ability to customize how you are scanning your slides.

Place the slides in the carrier tray, and insert the carrier tray into the scanner.

    • 4

Press the "Start" button on the scanner or in the software to commence the scan. Each slide will appear in a small window in the software. This is a preview window, and it allows you to crop the slide and make other small adjustments if necessary.

Save the slide into the folder you created, and repeat the process until all you slides have been scanned.
