How to Reduce Camera Vibration

There are two main factors that affect the sharpness of pictures taken with single lens reflex (SLR) cameras: how accurately focused the lens was when the picture was taken, and how still the camera was when the picture was taken. Today's modern lenses, and some digital SLR's, have an "Image Stabilization" (IS) or "Vibration Reduction" (VR) program built into them. These sophisticated features combat camera vibration, and increase the possibility of a sharp image. Film SLR cameras do not have the same features, though you can still minimize camera vibration by following some easy steps.

      Use "Mirror Lock-up." Some 35mm cameras, and just about all medium format cameras, have the ability to "lock" the mirror into the position it travels during exposure. The mirror moves very quickly, and the torque created can cause the camera to shake. Mirror Lock-up minimizes this shake..

      Use a tripod. For long exposures, or any time you are using a long telephoto lens, use a tripod to keep the camera and lens stable. A good tripod and head attachment should be sturdy enough to support both the camera and lens.

      Use a cable or remote release. If you press the shutter release button too sharply or abruptly, you may induce camera vibration. A cable or remote release allows you to activate the camera without having to touch the shutter release.

      Practice proper breathing and camera holding techniques. With practice, you should be able to hand-hold a camera steady at a shutter speed of 1/15th of a second. Hold the camera in such a way that you support the lens with your left hand while gripping the camera with your right hand. Keep your elbows close to your body to create a sturdy holding position. Slowly exhale, and press the shutter release after you have expelled the air from your lungs.
