Homemade Variable Polarizing Filter

Polarizing filters are used in photography to filter out certain light as it hits the camera lens at a specific angle. Whether you are shooting with a film or digital camera, polarizing filters cut down on the amount of "glare" or reflection created on a bright day. The image comes out more saturated with deep, dark colors. Polarizing filters can be expensive, but you can use an old filter bracket and materials you already have around the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an old or broken filter that has the same thread size for the lens you want to mount the filter on. Determine the thread size by looking on the side of the filter ring.

    • 2

Locate a piece of polarizing material, either from a pair of sunglasses with plastic lenses or an LCD computer screen that has polarizing screens. You will cut up the selected item.

    • 3

Lay the polarizing material on a flat surface. Lay the filter on top of it, and trace out the inside of the filter.

    • 4

Use a utility knife to cut the polarizing material to the size of the filter.

    • 5

Sand the edge of the material to remove any sharp or rough edges.

    • 6

Run a bead of glue around the inside of the filter ring, and insert the polarizing material. Let it dry. Your homemade polarizing filter is ready to use.
