How to Use a White Background in Photography

White backgrounds are primarily used in studio photography, often for shooting products or advertisements. A white background gives the subject the appearance of floating in empty space, which can be useful for showcasing a particular product, achieving a minimal look or having a clean background for digital manipulation. To use a white background in the studio, you will need sufficient height and room length to fit your subject and a method to hang your background.

Things You'll Need

  • White seamless paper or fabric
  • Long wooden rod for hanging
  • A-clamps (at least 2)
  • Masking tape

Instructions

    • 1

Get a roll of white seamless paper or white cloth. You can purchase seamless background paper from professional photography stores, or order it from photography suppliers online. You can pick up white seamless fabric at your local fabric store. White seamless fabric will need to be washed regularly, whereas paper can be used and thrown away.

    • 2

Hang the paper so that the top of the roll is at least two feet above the height of your subject. It is probably better to go higher, especially if your subject is a person who intends to move his or her arms in any way. You want to leave plenty of extra white space around your subject so that you have options when composing your photograph. You can hang your seamless paper by inserting a long, wooden rod, similar to broomstick, into the roll of paper and attaching it to hooks. If you do not have hooks in your photo studio, you will need to have some installed.

    • 3

Pull the paper (or fabric) out at an angle, leaving a wide curve where the paper hits the floor. This is what gives the subject an effect of "floating" in white space. You need to pull the paper out far enough so that you have room to frame your subject the way you want to. It is also important to make sure the curve of the paper is not sharp, which will leave a visible shadow in your images. When you have your paper at the desired length, clamp the roll in place with an A-clamp on each side.

Tape the edges of the paper to the floor with masking tape, to prevent it from moving. This is particularly important if you are working with models, who have a tendency to move around. Set up your background and foreground lights and you're done.
