How to Fix Corrupt JPEG Photos

Digital photos are commonly saved using a format called JPEG. JPEG stands for the "Joint Photographic Experts Group" and just like any digital format used to save data it can be susceptible to becoming damaged or corrupted from time to time. The cause of the damage to file can happen at the time the picture is taken, or may occur during post production. Whenever it does happen, there a few steps you can take to repair the image.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the file using a different program. If you regularly use Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Lightroom to view and open your images, try using a different program. To do so, right on the corrupted image, select "Open With" from the drop down menu, and select a program that is different from your current program.

    • 2

Locate the image file on your hard drive, not through your viewing program, but by searching the drive, then folder directly. Right click on the image select "Rename" and give the file a new name. Import the new file into your browser and open it.

    • 3

Open an JPEG image recovery program like, "Davory", "JPEG Recovery 5.0", or "Pix Recovery", and open the corrupted image in one of those programs to allow the software to reassemble the image. Once done, save the corrected image back to the hard drive with a new file name and import that file name into your computer.
