How to Protect Pictures in Photo Albums

Photographs are vulnerable to damage from the sun, heat and humidity. People may also unwittingly harm pictures by simply touching them, due to the natural oils found on skin. Luckily, pictures are rather easy to protect. Photo albums protect pictures by providing a barrier between the picture and the environment. Properly insert your pictures into albums and store the albums in a safe place, and your pictures will remain in good condition for many years.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an album with photo pockets. The pockets will protect your pictures and allow you to easily insert and remove them. Read the label on the photo album to make sure the photo pockets do not contain PVC (polyvinylchloride) plastics, as these plastics may damage your pictures.

    • 2

Touch only the sides and backs of your photos. The oil from your fingers may damage the picture.

    • 3

Slide your photo into the photo pocket. Be careful to slip the photograph inside the pocket without bending or tearing it.

    • 4

Store the album in a cool, dry place that does not get direct sunlight. Heat and humidity may cause the album's pages to stick together and sunlight may fade your pictures.
